In March 2015, Victor Oladipo, a former standout guard for the Indiana Hoosiers and then with the Orlando Magic, donated $15,000 to the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center. This contribution, part of his winnings from the Dunk Cancer social media fundraiser during the 2015 NBA All-Star Weekend, was designated for breast cancer research.
Oladipo expressed his gratitude towards the Indiana University community, stating, “It’s an honor and a blessing to be able to give back first and foremost to the Indiana University family.” He emphasized his commitment to supporting cancer research, highlighting the importance of advancing treatments and prevention strategies.
The donation bolstered the cancer center’s breast cancer research program, comprising 35 faculty members dedicated to both laboratory research and patient care. The funds were instrumental in developing new research initiatives, especially amid declining federal research grant funding.
This act of generosity underscores Oladipo’s dedication to philanthropy and his ongoing connection to the Indiana University community.
