KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Former Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Bru McCoy has officially announced his medical retirement from football, bringing an end to his collegiate career due to ongoing health issues.
McCoy, a key playmaker for the Vols, made the announcement in a heartfelt statement shared via social media. He expressed gratitude for his time at Tennessee and reflected on the difficult decision to step away from the game he loves.
“This is not how I imagined my football journey ending,” McCoy wrote. “But after extensive discussions with doctors and my family, I have come to the conclusion that stepping away from the game is in the best interest of my long-term health.”
McCoy suffered a significant injury during the 2023 season, which limited his ability to return to the field. Despite hopes of recovery, the lingering effects of the injury ultimately led to his retirement.
Originally a highly touted recruit, McCoy transferred to Tennessee from USC and quickly became a fan favorite due to his physical style of play and leadership on and off the field.
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel praised McCoy’s contributions to the program, saying, “Bru is the kind of teammate and person you want in your locker room. We support him fully and are proud of everything he accomplished here.”
Though his playing days have ended, McCoy hinted at staying involved with the sport in other ways, stating he hopes to inspire and mentor younger athletes in the future.
