In a heartfelt podcast appearance, former Michigan State wide receiver Keon Coleman opened up for the first time about the emotional toll that led to his transfer to Florida State. While fans assumed the move was performance-based, Coleman revealed he battled severe depression during his final months in East Lansing. “There were nights I couldn’t sleep, days I couldn’t focus,” Coleman said. “It wasn’t just football—it was everything.” The candid confession stunned fans and teammates who viewed him as one of MSU’s most electrifying players. Coleman, who led the Spartans in receiving yards during his last season, said the decision to leave was deeply personal, stemming from burnout and feeling isolated in a struggling program. He described the Florida State transition as a “rebirth,” crediting FSU’s support staff and environment for helping him find stability. Michigan State has since released a supportive statement, praising Coleman for his courage. The college football world has rallied behind him, with players from across the country speaking out about mental health challenges. His story adds to the growing conversation around the pressures student-athletes face and highlights the need for programs to prioritize mental well-being alongside performance.
