Hunter Dickinson’s 23 Points Not Enough as Kansas Crashes Out Against Arkansas

Hunter Dickinson delivered a dominant performance, scoring 23 points and pulling down 13 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to save the Kansas Jayhawks from a stunning 79–72 loss to Arkansas in the NCAA Tournament’s first round. The upset sent shockwaves through college basketball, as Kansas—once a top contender—exited March Madness earlier than expected. Despite Dickinson’s double-double, the Jayhawks struggled to defend Arkansas guard Tramon Mark, who erupted for 24 points, including a clutch three with under two minutes left. Kevin McCullar Jr. added 14 points for Kansas, but foul trouble and inconsistent perimeter defense proved costly. Coach Bill Self admitted postgame, “We didn’t play our brand of basketball. Arkansas beat us to every loose ball.” The Jayhawks shot just 5-of-21 from beyond the arc, and late-game execution faltered under pressure. Dickinson, a transfer from Michigan, said he was “heartbroken” but proud of the team’s fight. “It wasn’t the ending we wanted, but I loved battling with these guys,” he said. With multiple seniors set to depart, Kansas faces big questions heading into the offseason. Self, however, remained optimistic. “We’ll reload,” he said. “That’s what we do.” The Jayhawks’ early exit will haunt them—but also fuel their future.
