He started as an assistant coach with the Nets under Bill Fitch and Chuck Daly, then moved to the Portland Trail Blazers and later the Indiana Pacers under Larry Bird. During his time with the Pacers, the team reached the Eastern Conference Finals in 1998 and the NBA Finals in 2000.
