Marco Sturm has been named the 30th head coach in Boston Bruins history, Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced June 5.

“Throughout this process, our goal was to identify a coach who could uphold our strong defensive foundation while helping us evolve offensively,” Sweeney said in a press release. “Marco impressed us at every step with his preparation, clarity, and passion. His path – playing for multiple NHL teams, coaching internationally, and leading at both the AHL and NHL levels – has shaped a well-rounded coach who’s earned this opportunity.”

Sturm most recently served as the head coach for the AHL’s Ontario Reign from 2022-25. Previously, Sturm was an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Kings from 2018-22 and head coach for the German Men’s National Team from 2015-18.

Sturm was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in 1997 and remained with the team until 2005. He spent 2005-2010 with the Bruins, then bounced between the Kings, Washington Capitals, Vancouver Canucks, and Florida Panthers from 2010-14 while recovering from both ACL and MCL tears.

“I’m incredibly honored to be named head coach of the Boston Bruins,” said Sturm. “Boston has always held a special place in my heart, and I know how much this team means to the city and to our fans. I’ve felt that passion as a player, and I can’t wait to be behind the bench and feel it again.”

Sturm was born in Dingolfing, Germany, also making him the first German head coach in NHL history. He is also the 14th person in Bruins history to both play and serve as head coach for the club.
