While Michigan gained one player from the NCAA transfer portal on Thursday, it lost two more.
Reserve defensive back Cameron Calhoun and reserve linebacker Joey Velazquez, a multi-sport star at Michigan, entered their names into the transfer portal ahead of Monday’s Rose Bowl game against Alabama (5 p.m. ET, ESPN), a team spokesman confirmed.
Velazquez, a graduate student with one year of eligibility remaining, is the more notable departure here. He appeared in 17 games for the football team, at both linebacker and on special teams, while starring on the Michigan baseball team. Over a four-season span, the Lewis Center, Ohio, native hit .255 with nine home runs and 51 RBI.
Collectively, he holds four Big Ten championships: Three in football (2021-23) and one in baseball, when the team won the league tournament in ‘22.
Calhoun, a true freshman, appeared in just two games for the Wolverines this season. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native has four years of eligibility remaining and will be immediately able to play in 2024.
The moves came with the Wolverines in southern California preparing to play the Crimson Tide in the College Football Playoff semifinal. Running back Capers “CJ” Stokes entered the transfer portal earlier this month but vowed to finish out the season with the team.
