The Boston Red Sox made a major splash over the last week by signing former Houston Astros gold glove winner and two-time World Series champion Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million contract.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Red Sox offered Bregman around $10 million more per year than any other suitor.
Bregman now joins a Red Sox team that has made significant moves to contend for the playoffs once again, after missing the postseason since 2021. During his introductory press conference on Sunday, Bregman revealed that a former Red Sox superstar played a key role in recruiting him to Boston during free agency.
My favorite player, Dustin Pedroia, did,” Bregman said. “He reached out a few times this offseason and talked to me about how special it is to be a part of the Boston Red Sox.”
Pedroia was the epitome of what it meant to be a Red Sox player. Throughout his 14-year career with the organization, he earned four All-Star appearances, two World Series titles, and four Gold Glove awards. In 2011, he was also named MVP.
After spending the last nine seasons with the Houston Astros, Bregman’s free agency journey, which saw several teams show interest, culminated in him choosing Boston just before spring training began.
