Red Wings Sign Griffins Forward as Kane Goes on IR
The Detroit Red Wings signed veteran AHL player Dominik Shine and called him up to help them deal with their latest injury issues.
The Red Wings announced that Patrick Kane was placed on the injured reserve, retroactive to Jan. 21. That doesn’t change his day-to-day status.
But when they play the Los Angeles Kings tonight, the Red Wings will be without J.T. Compher and maybe Vladimir Tarasenko. Compher was hurt on a hit by Emil Lilleberg in the 2-0 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning Saturday, and Tarasenko is dealing with an illness
The league’s Department of Player Safety ordered Lilleberg to be available for a hearing this afternoon for the purpose of determining whether supplemental discipline is warranted.
Tyler Motte is ready to play again, but if Tarasenko is out then Shine could be making his NHL debut at age 31.
Shine is from Pinckney, Michigan and has played nine seasons for the Griffins. He was playing under an AHL contract. His new deal covers this season and 2025-26 season. He is a former Northern Michigan University player.
With 11 goals and 32 points in 40 games, Shine is enjoying a career season with the Griffins. The new deal rewards a player the Red Wings want to keep in their organization for next season.
The Griffins always need AHL veterans to help them stay competitive while Detroit’s prospects are learning.
The Red Wings undoubtedly feel fortunate to have Michael Rasmussen playing tonight after the ugly spill he took while scoring an empty net goal against Tampa. He was tripped by Nikita Kucherov and went crashing into the net. The injury looked worse than it actually was.
