Sergio Mitre, a former pitcher for the New York Yankees, has been sentenced to 50 years in prison by Mexican authorities for the murder of his then-girlfriend’s 22-month-old daughter. Mitre, who played for the Yankees during the 2009-2010 seasons, was convicted of femicide involving the infant child and is currently incarcerated at Saltillo Prison in Saltillo, Mexico.
This case adds to a series of legal issues involving former Yankees players. In 2012, ex-outfielder Rosendo “Rusty” Torres was arrested on charges of sexually abusing an 8-year-old girl he coached in Long Island. Additionally, former pitcher John Wetteland faced sexual assault charges in 2019, though they were later dismissed.
