Monday night’s national championship game will be an interesting watch for LSU head coach Brian Kelly.
Kelly was the head coach at Notre Dame for 12 seasons from 2010-21 before leaving the program for LSU in November 2021, a move that shocked the college football world. During his run in South Bend, Kelly took the Fighting Irish to the College Football Playoff twice and reached the BCS National Championship Game in 2012 before being blown out by Alabama.

When he left for LSU, Kelly infamously said he was looking “to be in an environment where I have the resources to win a national championship.” Three years later, Kelly is 29-11 with no Playoff appearances with the Tigers, while his successor at Notre Dame, Marcus Freeman, has the Irish in the national title game, where they will play Ohio State.
In an interview with CBS Sports’ Brandon Marcello following an American Football Coaches Association meeting in Charlotte Tuesday, Kelly said he has no ill will toward his former program and will be rooting for Notre Dame on Monday night.
“I’m happy for all those guys, I pull for them,” Kelly told Marcello. “A lot of the guys there that are on both sides of the ball, I recruited. Obviously I want to see those guys win it all, and I think they’re in a great position. Totally excited for those guys.”
