REPORT: Tigers could target Rockies $70 million All-Star to shore up third base…..

Tigers could target Rockies $70 million All-Star to shore up third base

The Detroit Tigers are currently at the top of the heap as they own the best record in all of Major League Baseball. Even in the toughest division in the league, the AL Central, Detroit remains a force.

Last year, they rose to prominence with an unprecedented second-half surge following a trade deadline fire sale.

This year, they are more likely to be buyers than sellers. One area that could use some work is third base.

Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report noted that an option for Detroit would be Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon.

The Tigers likely regret not signing Alex Bregman in the offseason, as he’s performing like an AL MVP candidate for Boston, while Jace Jung was recently optioned to Triple-A after hitting just .111 in 18 games. Whether it’s Nolan Arenado, Ryan McMahon or someone else, the hot corner appears to be the most-pressing need in Detroit,” Kelly wrote.

McMahon, a former All-Star, is off to a rough start in 2025. Though he’s hit six home runs, he’s only slashing .206/.333/.374 with 11 RBI and a .708 OPS.

But with the Rockies well out of contention and positioned to be a seller rather than a buyer, it makes sense that McMahon would be on the block.

He does provide power from the left side of the plate, and the Tigers could use an extra bat in their lineup as they try to build off of last year’s second-half run.

The 30-year-old has spent several years with the Rockies without being part of a contending team. Eventually, a contending team will need a presence like him.

The Tigers fell short in the Bregman sweepstakes and weren’t on Nolan Arenado’s list of preferred destinations. So, with both players not options, McMahon could be the next best thing.

We’ll see where Detroit leans in their pursuit of a third baseman.
