“We’re getting a little spoiled”: HC Todd McLellan makes his thoughts extremely clear about Red Wings’ power play limitations in 5-1 loss to Lightning

Detroit Red Wings coach Todd McLellanmade his frustration clear regarding the team’s power play after their 5-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. The Red Wings went 1-for-6 on the man advantage, while allowing two power play goals against the Lightning.

When asked about what Tampa Bay did to limit Detroit’s power play, McLellan responded:

“Well, it was what Tampa did, but it was also what Detroit was doing. We were slow, we were sloppy. You know, passing was, was not crisp. It was; it was; we were looking up, looking off, what was clean, and trying the more difficult play.

“You know, I think when you get one in a game, you got to be fairly satisfied. We’re probably getting a little spoiled here, expecting two or three a night, and that’s not the way it works in this league.

McLellan noted that the power play added a goal and the penalty kill gave up two, but he was unhappy with the team’s performance around the net.

Jake Guentzel, Nikita Kucherov, Darren Raddysh, Mitchell Chaffee and Brayden Point scored for Tampa Bay. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 39 saves. Lucas Raymond scored for the Detroit Red Wings. Cam Talbot allowed five goals on 16 shots before being replaced by Alex Lyon in the third period.

McLellan explained the goalie change:

“We talked about it in the second period, getting Alex some work before tomorrow night. He’s going to play tomorrow night in Dallas, but we wanted Talbs to finish and Alex to go in with a bit of a warm up and stretch instead of going in cold.”

The Detroit Red Wings will next take on the Dallas Stars on Sunday.
