KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — As the transfer portal continues to reshape college football rosters across the country, the Tennessee Volunteers have made key additions on the defensive side of the ball. The Vols have secured commitments from Clarence Massamba, a physical and athletic defensive back, and Josh Schell, a high-motor defensive lineman, both transferring from Division II powerhouse Grand Valley State.

Massamba is expected to provide immediate competition and depth in Tennessee’s secondary. Known for his instincts and tackling ability, he has the versatility to play both safety and corner. Schell, on the other hand, brings strength and explosiveness to the defensive line, and could make an early impact in the Vols’ defensive rotation. The pair helped lead a stout Grand Valley State defense in 2024, drawing attention from several FBS programs.

Head coach Josh Heupel and his staff have emphasized talent acquisition through the portal, aiming to build depth and experience as Tennessee competes in the challenging SEC landscape.

In a related move, two former Tennessee players have found new opportunities at Colorado under head coach Deion Sanders. Defensive back John Slaughter and linebacker Larry Campbell have transferred to Boulder, where Coach Prime continues to build a dynamic and high-profile program. Both players were seen as promising talents but struggled to find consistent playing time in Knoxville.

The movement of players underscores the volatility and opportunity presented by the NCAA transfer portal era, where roster turnover is now an annual norm. With spring practices wrapping up and fall camp on the horizon, these roster changes could prove pivotal in both Tennessee’s and Colorado’s seasons.
