BATON ROUGE – Leaving Baton Rouge and heading to Oxford, Mississippi, for its pivotal Southeastern Conference rivalry showdown at Ole Miss last week, LSU football’s offensive line was already in flux.
Across the last two games, eight different linemen took meaningful snaps due to a myriad of reasons. But things got a lot murkier up front on offense during pregame warmups last weekend as freshman starting right tackle Weston Davissustained an injury and was ruled out just 22 minutes prior to kickoff.
On Wednesday, Brian Kelly shared details on Davis’ injury as well as the status of sophomore left guard Paul Mubenga, who suffered an ankle injury in LSU’s 24-19 loss to the Rebels last Saturday.
Weston got hurt pregame. He caught a helmet, fractured his nose in pregame and was concussed,” Kelly said. “He’s moving forward, he’s doing well. My expectation is that he can clear the protocol but that’s one thing I never like to get into. But he’s moving in the right direction from that.”
For Mubenga, it’s a high-ankle sprain. Kelly said he’s unsure of how things will progress for the 6-foot-5, 317-pounder over the next week. Junior center Braelin Moore suffered a high-ankle sprain against Louisiana Tech earlier this season but played the following week.
Some respond better than others, (Mubenga’s) an offensive linemen. Braelin had one as well so we’re going to play it day-by-day,” said Kelly.
In Davis’ place against Ole Miss, freshman Carius Curne stepped in and got his first start of his young career with the Tigers (4-1, 1-1 SEC). Sophomore Coen Echols finished the game for LSU at left guard, a spot he’s come in and played several snaps the last few weeks.
