The College Football Playoff Semifinals started off with an absolute classic, as Notre Dame and Penn State went toe-to-toe for four quarters before Fight Irish kicker Mitch Jeter drilled a 41-yard field goal that sealed the deal on a 27-24 win to send Notre Dame to the National Championship in Atlanta. The Fighting Irish will have a chance now to secure their first national title since 1988.
While the celebration will continue through the night in South Bend, there are some other takes on social media that are not in favor of the result and where it stands. One person in particular is the Miami Hurricanes and Dallas Cowboys legend Michael Irvin, who took to social media during the game to share his distaste for both of the programs that played in the Orange Bowl
Via his X account, Irving posted “I have such a disdain for both of these schools @PennStateFball and @NDFootball after each have COST @CanesFootball a National Championship. But I must admit, this is a GREAT GAME!!!!!”

While Irvin couldn’t help but acknowledge the entertainment factor of the game, he made it known that Hurricane fans like himself have a sour taste watching Penn State and Notre Dame compete for a chance to make the national championship in their own stadium.
Referring to his post, Penn State prevented the Hurricanes from winning a national title in 1987 in the Fiesta Bowl, where Joe Paterno led the Nittany Lions to a 14-10 win over the Hurricanes.
As for Notre Dame, they defeated Miami the season after in 1988 during the regular season, as it ended the Hurricanes’ 36-game winning streak and propelled the Fighting Irish to a national title that season
While the Fighting Irish have more national titles than Miami, Hurricane fans have seen three national championship victories since Notre Dame’s most recent.
