Nobody was surprised the moment the Chicago Bears traded Justin Fields to make way for Caleb Williams’ inevitable arrival. The Pittsburgh Steelers may have been an interesting destination since they also just got Russell Wilson, but it makes sense given how uncertain Mr. Unlimited is at QB.
If there was an aspect of the game that fans would find disagreeable with, it’s the fact that the Bears let go of their franchise QB for so little. Anyone would tell you that a Day 3 pick is a very small cost for a player of Fields’ caliber.
The Spun’s Daniel Bates reported that the team rejected the chance to send Justin Fields away to a more established team to send him to a team like Pittsburgh where he will have a better situation overall.
Bates writes:
Per a report from ESPN’s Courtney Cronin and Brooke Pryor: “The Bears had an additional offer with stronger draft capital from a team with an established starter, per a source, but chose to send Fields to the Pittsburgh with the hope of putting the 25-year-old in a position to continue his development — first as a backup to [Russell] Wilson and eventually as a starter.”
If we are to believe this narrative, the team wanted to make sure Fields gets the best environment where he can become a starter as soon as possible.
Looking back on Justin Fields’ time at Soldier Field
Fields had three tenuous years with the Chicago Bears, and it’s hard to look back at his stint at Soldier Field without acknowledging that the circumstances weren’t great for him.
In his three seasons as a Bear, he threw for 6674 yards, 40 TDs, and 30 INTs on a 60.3% completion rate and an abysmal 10-28-0 QB record.
Hopefully, things turn out better for him with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
